• Why do this? Keeping scouting relevant to today and in the future is one reason, but the big reason is to make a tiny dent in and contribute to the understanding of the decline in interest of our children in science and math. The U.S. is slipping further and further in our ability to provide people to address our needs for science and technology in the future – from doctors to software engineers. Our use of science and technology is increasing rapidly, but the number of people who understand and work with it is dropping in the U.S. With a loss like this, the U.S. will clearly lose its lead in science and technology and drop into the ranks of second- and third-world countries. That’s why Space Day was formed along with the many other efforts I have talked about. The American Competitiveness Initiative sounded the alarm loudly, and it is still being sounded. You can find out more current info from the Nation’s Report Card (http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/) and the Gates Foundation (http://www.gatesfoundation.org/), particularly the recent speech by Bill Gates to the National Council of State Legislatures (visit http://www.gatesfoundation.org/speeches-commentary/Pages/bill-gates-2009-conference-state-legislatures.aspx for a video and transcript). When you see these viewpoints, it is clear that the issues of improving science and math education for our students and reversing the current trend must not be taken lightly.
• We will continue our discussion over the next several weeks while we build, judge, and launch model rockets as a part of our World Space Week activities. The rocket launch is currently set for October 10, 2009 (the end of World Space Week, sponsored by the United Nations).
